This page contains a list of things o look out for when buying a Beetle.
Does the car match the model advertised?
Is all paperwork available? (vehicle registration, service history )
Is the chassis number correct for the model year?
Limitations may occur without:
The car should have 12-volt electrics.
Disk brakes
Check:
Is the car how it was when bought (standard) or have owners modified it?
Is the bodywork smooth and free of rust- are there signs of filler or welded areas?
Is the floorpan free of rust- especially beneath mats/carpets and under the back seats? Are the mats and carpets dry?
Are the door pillars and sills strong and free of rust? Make sure all doors fit and work sufficiently.
Are there any signs of accidents or damage repair?
Are the window rubbers in good condition?- check for damp.
If for any reason the car has been restored, then did the restoration involve the removal of the body from the chassis? What parts were fitted and were they genuine?
Are the hoses, seals, tin ware in the engine area all in good condition?
Is the current owner familiar with the servicing requirements? Has the correct oil been used and changed at regular intervals?
Does the engine make suspicious noises, leaks and fumes?
Is the oil pressure warning light working well?
Is the heater working effectively?
Does the clutch slip?
Do the gears change easily and silently?
Are the wheels balanced? Does the car run straight ahead with the steering wheel in the straight position?
Are the brakes working well? When applied does the car pull to one side?
Have the tyres got good tread on them? Are all four tyres the same?
How is the condition of the interior?
Do all electrics work- horn, wipers, and lights ?
Are there any non-standard electrical gadgets fitted. Is the wiring satisfactory?
