PROBLEM:
Once the brakes are applied, the car pulls to the side.
DIAGNOSIS:
the pressure of the tires is wrong
the front end is out of line
the front/rear tires don't match each other
restricted brake lines/hoses
malfunctioning drum brake/caliper assembly
the suspension parts are loose
backing parts/calipers are loose
the brake shoe/pad material is excessively worn- REPLACE
PROBLEM:
Once the brakes are applied, a high pitched squealing sound is heard.
DIAGNOSIS:
the brake pads/shoes are worn out- REPLACE
dirty/glazed/brand new brake linings. If they are brand new linings, then the noise should disappear after some use
PROBLEM:
There is roughness/chatter within the brakes.
DIAGNOSIS:
excessive disk lateral run out
the pad wear is uneven
the disk is defective
drum is out of round
PROBLEM:
Excessive effort is needed to stop the car.
DIAGNOSIS:
partial system failure
the pad/shoes are excessively worn- REPLACE
piston in caliper/wheel cylinder is stuck/sluggish
the brake pads/shoes have been contaminated with oil- CLEAN
new pads/shoes installed but not sealed
PROBLEM:
Brake pedal travels for too long.
DIAGNOSIS:
the brake system has partial failure
fluid in master cylinder is below minimum level
the system contains trapped air
adjustment of the brakes needed
PROBLEM:
The brakes are continuously dragging.
DIAGNOSIS:
there is binding in the break pedal mechanism
the brake line hoses are restricted
the parking brake adjustment is incorrect
PROBLEM:
There is grabbing/uneven action when brakes are applied.
DIAGNOSIS:
binding brake pedal mechanism
there is grease/oil on the brake lining
PROBLEM:
When pressed, the brake pedal feels spongy.
DIAGNOSIS:
hydraulic lines contain trapped air
mounting bolts on the master cylinder are loose/ TIGHTEN
the master cylinder is defective
PROBLEM:
My brake pedal travels straight to the floor with little or no resistance.
DIAGNOSIS:
there is little/no fluid in the master cylinder reservoir
you have a leaking caliper/leaking wheel cylinder pistons
loose/damaged/disconnected brake lines
